Florian, Grolmanstrasse 52. Tel.: 3139184. International cuisine and high class fare. Now extremely fashionable, particularly during the February Berlin Film Festival.

Hartke, Meinickestrasse 27. Tel.: 8819827. Rugged, wooden tables groaning with Eisbein (knuckle of pork), Erbspuree (pureed peas), and Rouladen (beef rolls) with Rotkohl (red cabbage). Plus sauerkraut and salzkartoffeln. Usually packed.

Hecker's Deele, Grolmanstrasse 35. Tel.: 88901. Also heavy on local color. Authentic Berlin cooking. Moderate prices. Cheerful waitresses in brocade.

Holl's, Damaschkestrasse 26. Tel.: 3232993. Owner Heinz Holl is a Berlin "original." Colorful showbiz crowd with lots of beautiful ladies. Diners go for the slices of beef in cabbage leaves. Reservations are essential.

Kernpinski Grill, Bristol Kempinski Hotel, Kurfurstendamm, 27. Tel.: 884340. The city's most elegant eating place. Some delicacies flown in from Paris.

Medala d'Argent, Kaiserin Augusta Allee 48. Tel.: 3456423. A very highclass Italian restaurant. Intimate atmosphere. Popular with ballet dancers and singers from the Deutsche Oper.

Paris Bar, Kantstrasse 152. Tel.: 3138052. High powered, high quality French cuisine. Nearby Academy of Arts supplies some of the clientele, which also comprises film people and business exec utives.
