Frankfurt Shopping

Frankfurt scores high on prices, but also on variety. The city's best stores are packed into a small area around the main square, the Hauptwache. On the square itself is a wide variety, both above and below street level, with the emphasis on groceries, flowers, clothing, tobacco products, photographic equipment, and bookstores. There are also plenty of cafes.

Next to the Hauptwache is the Zed pedestrian zone, which claims to hold the all German record for spending per square foot or meter of retail space. Where else is champagne dispensed on the street to entice buyers? Department, clothing, and footware stores predominate, but the Kleinmarkthalle is a covered, lively market for international food. Schillerstrasse, near the stock exchange, is thronged with men's and women's fashion boutiques. Steinweg offers jewelry and perfumes, and Goethestrasse goes for top mark elegance and exclusivity. Fressgasse, or gourmet alley, has cafes. with terraces, delicatessens, and wine shops. Nearby Kaiserstrasse is dominated by the BFG skyscraper and its galleries of restaurants and haute couture stores.
